Purpose of the Competition

EGSOGL would like to encourage emerging and established singers to explore the wide repertoire of Edvard Grieg, to celebrate his place in song literature, and to help spread knowledge of his lesser-known works. The required repertoire for this competition (which is the first of many) coincides with the theme of the 2026 Conference: works by Edvard Grieg and Robert and Clara Schumann!

Divisions, Prizes, and Eligibility

Eligibility: Open to vocalists of all ages. Entrants and their teachers must  reside in the United States. 

Application Fee: $25, paid by PayPal (link in application) or mailed check

Pre-Professional Division (ages 22 & under):
  • $500 first prize and performance award**
  • $300 second prize
  • $200 third prize

Professional Division (ages 22 & over):
  • $500 first prize and performance award**
  • $300 second prize
  • $200 third prize

Special "Norwegian Prize":
  • Awarded to the singer who sings Grieg in the original Norwegian or Danish and demonstrates outstanding diction

Travel Stipend ($150 per finalist):
  • $150 awarded to each of the finalists of the vocal competition towards lodging/travel expenses

**Performance award: First place winners will be recognized on the Winner's Showcase at the Saturday May 9 5:00 p.m. concert and have their performance uploaded here on the EGSOGL website

Basic Requirements

Rounds:
  • Preliminary Recording Round: Recording submission due March 8, 2026 (notification of results on March 21)
  • Finals Round (Live): May 8-9, 2026 (Goshen IN)

Required Repertoire:
  • 1 song by Edvard Grieg*
  • 1 song by either Robert or Clara Schumann
  • 1 art song from the classical repertoire of your choice 
* Special "Norwegian Prize" eligibility if singing Grieg in the original Norwegian or Danish

Singers are encouraged to sing all repertoire in the original language, but selections may be sung in translation.
