Purpose of the Competition
EGSOGL would like to encourage young singers to explore the wide repertoire of Edvard Grieg, to celebrate his place in the vocal literature, and to help spread knowledge of his lesser-known works. The required repertoire for this competition (which is the first of many) coincides with the theme of the 2019 Symposium: works by Edvard Grieg and French / Impressionist composers, and a piece of your choice!
Divisions, Prizes, and Eligibility
Eligibility: Open to vocalists ages 16 - 23. Entrants must reside in the United States.
Young Artist Division (ages 16 - 23):
**Performance Award: First place winners are invited to perform at the final concert of the "A Norwegian in Paris" symposium on Tuesday, April 2, 2019.
All selections must be memorized. Only complete, unabridged, original compositions for voice by the composers are allowed. No cuts are permitted; Repeats are at the discretion of the applicant.
* NOTE: Special consideration will be shown to contestants who choose to sing the Grieg selection in the original Norwegian, when applicable (while most of Grieg's songs are in Norwegian, he did compose several songs with German texts).
Norwegian Diction & Grieg Scores
For singers willing to take the challenge of singing the Grieg selection in the original Norwegian, there are several new resources available, including Anna Hersey's guide, "Scandinavian Song" (available here) and "Midnight Sun", Mimmi Fulmer's three volumes of various Scandinavian songs (available here). For more guidance on diction, please contact us at GreatLakesGrieg@gmail.com.
For singers wishing to sing the Grieg selection in another language, we will compile a list of recommended translations and post there here shortly! (Please note: Grieg did compose several songs with original German texts, which is perfectly acceptable.)
