1:30 p.m. Keynote Address
Dr. William Halverson,
- Unlike Mozart, Grieg was by all accounts a quite ordinary child whose genius emerged during a remarkable two-year period of his life after he had completed his formal education. This lecture will trace the emergence of Grieg’s genius via citations from his autobiographical writings and examples of his early piano compositions.
2:45 p.m. Discussion: SalzBergen--Edvard Grieg's Reflections on Mozart
Dr. Gregory Martin, University of Indianapolis
- Perhaps to the chagrin of Grieg himself—but to our benefit—financial need required Grieg to publish articles about notable composers. His reflections on Mozart provide a unique, Romantic perspective on the Classical giant, and demonstrate Grieg’s fealty to and reverence for Mozart.
3:20 p.m. Lecture-Performance: Mozart Piano Sonatas…Plus Grieg!
Drs. Luke and Mary Rose Norell, Goshen College Community School of the Arts
- For anyone who has ever wondered what a Mozart sonata would sound like if Grieg had written it! Grieg’s sense of humor and harmonic language are in full view in these delightful two-piano arrangements of some of Mozart’s most beloved piano sonatas.
4:00 p.m. Vocal Panel Discussion: Interpreting Grieg in His Own Language
Njål Sparbo, 2009 Grieg Prize Recipient
Mimmi Fulmer, University of Wisconsin
Dr. Marla Fogderud, Northern State University
- This interactive discussion with three singers will demonstrate the variety, complexity, and beauty of the Scandinavian languages, and will inspire all to delve deeper into Scandinavian literature and Grieg interpretations.
4:45 p.m. Lecture Performance: Emotion Through Song
Dr. Marla Fogderud, Northern State University
- Marla Fogderud, soprano, and Luke Norell, piano, will present a lecture recital that explores how W.A. Mozart and Edvard Grieg each approached several common emotional themes in their song literature.
